Our Story

In February 2020, Cliff Owen and his Family became the sole owners of The Thames Hotel. This was the culmination of 26 years of Cliff's Management of this historic Hotel, after he bought it with an investment partner in 1994. Since his Family gained 100% ownership, Cliff has been upgrading the fabric of the buildings, and is planning to restore many of the Hotel's original external features, in keeping with it's long, and sometimes eventful, history.

An Eventful History

The “New” Thames Hotel was built in the late 1880s by Mr H. Woodhouse, a prosperous local Boat Builder. At the time it was considered gigantic. It boasted a Telegraph Office, and enjoyed the patronage of “Peers Galore”.

An exciting history was enjoyed by the Hotel with the arrival of the motor car and the prospect of a visit to the River.

Distinguished visitors included Princess Frederica of Hanover, great-granddaughter of King George III.

The Proprietors seem to have had an equally adventurous time. It is believed that one owner lost the freehold on a single ill-fated game of cards.

MEET OUR STAFF

People are at the heart of our business and what unites us all is a passion for a great experience at The Thames Hotel. We'd like to introduce you to some of the key people who will help ensure that you enjoy your stay with us.

Emily Blake

Operations Manager
Emily has been the Operations manager at the Thames Hotel for the past 10 years. Emily ensures the Hotel runs smoothly and helps to train and develop the other managers and staff at the Hotel. Emily has worked in the hospitality trade for over 14 years and started her career in the pub trade and moved on to Hotels. Emily is recently married and has a son. Emily is always looking to improve the Hotel and takes great pleasure when the restaurant is full and the Hotel is busy. Her main passion is customer service and she wants every customer to leave with a smile.

Steve

Duty Manager
Steve is a Duty Manager at the Thames Hotel. Steve has previous experience of working for one of the big chains of Hotels and has brought his knowledge with him to help run the Thames. Steve enjoys helping guests with any issues that may arise during their stay. He has a good repore with our regular customers and is mostly seen working on the evening Manager shifts or Night shifts. Steve loves in cooperating his history in the printing industry to adapt the running of the Thames Hotel. Steve is a kind, efficient and courteous member of our team.

Trish

Duty Manager
Trish is one of the Duty managers at the Thames Hotel working here for 4 years now. She is a good all rounder who enjoys interacting with guests and utilises her 20 years’ experience in the hospitality Trade to help with the day to day running of the Hotel. Trish has 2 grandchildren that she adores and spends most of her spare time with them. Trish is a bright and bubbly character who loves working with the general public.
